From Pierce Brothers to Fogbuster Coffee.....

A little while ago I got to sit down with the owners of Fogbuster Coffee and chat about what makes their coffee so special. Last week in Part 1 of our conversation we chatted about how their coffee is roasted and their high standards to make a superior product. This week ....

Darren, Sean and I had a lovely chat about their recent re-branding and new labeling. Where Pierce Brothers Coffee started and how it became Fogbuster Coffee. 

Labeling on packages can be confusing for a lot of reasons. After you watch the video, here is a little more in-depth explanation of the certifications to help you understand the process. Hopefully, your next trip to the store will be a little less confusing.

Fair Trade Certified Seal- means that one or more of the ingredients in the product were produced and traded in accordance with Fair Trade USA’s standards. Fair Trade USA aims to help ensure that farmers and workers are paid fair prices and wages, work in safe conditions, protect the environment, and earn community development funds to improve their lives. 

Organic-Organic certification verifies that your farm or handling facility located anywhere in the world complies with the USDA organic regulations and allows you to sell, label, and represent your products as organic

Certified Kosher-Kosher certification is the stamp of Kosher approval by rabbinic agency. Verifying they have checked the products, ingredients, production facility, and actual production to ensure all ingredients, tools and machinery have no trace of non-kosher substances.

Labels that are not certified by agencies or the FDA or USDA. These terms however are not regulated labeling.  

Natural, Natural Food or whole foods- What we think it means, that nothing artificial or synthetic (including all color additives regardless of source) has been included in, or has been added to, a food that would not normally be expected to be in that food. A lot of times our brain fills in the blanks. Don’t be fooled. “Natural” doesn’t mean healthy, safe, or even from nature!

Darren and Sean make sure that their coffee is of the highest quality every step of the way. Labels like these on packaging matter.  It signals that the company wants to give the best quality product possible.
